What does each role do?
The four titles split mainly on timing, before or after the sale, and on whether the person writes code that runs in production.
| Role | Main work | When | Writes production code? | Usually measured by |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Forward deployed engineer | Builds, deploys and runs the product on one customer's systems and data | After the sale, for weeks to months | Yes | A deployment people use |
| Solutions engineer | Demos, proofs of concept and technical answers; post-sale configuration at some employers | Mostly before the sale | Sometimes | Deals supported |
| Sales engineer | Explains the product's technical case to buyers and proves it works | Before the sale, some troubleshooting after | Rarely | Revenue, often with commission |
| Solutions architect | Designs how the product fits the customer's wider systems | Before and during implementation | Rarely | Designs adopted |
The encyclopedia entry on sales engineering describes a hybrid of sales and engineering that covers both pre-sales help and post-sale troubleshooting, usually paid as salary plus commission. A solutions architect produces designs, options and plans for a specific solution rather than running it.
Where do the roles overlap?
They overlap most after the sale, where the same job can carry any of the four titles.
The encyclopedia entry on the role lists solutions architects and sales engineers among the jobs a forward deployed engineer's duties overlap with. A venture investor's essay on forward deployed job titles argues that the original title was given to what had been solutions and integration engineers, a rebrand that raised the status of the work.
The practical line is hands-on code. The Pragmatic Engineer reports that at one AI model developer, solutions architects rarely write code on customers' infrastructure, while its forward deployed engineers are much more hands-on. The glossary defines each title and the terms around them.
How does pay compare?
Public figures exist for sales engineers; for forward deployed engineers there are mostly posted ranges, so compare with care.
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual wage for sales engineers at $124,900 in May 2025. US forward deployed postings in our Hiring Index advertise a median base range of $160,000 to $230,000, with a median midpoint of $198,000. The structures differ too: sales engineers are often paid salary plus commission, while these are base ranges alone, so compare total pay, not base pay.

How can you tell which job a posting really is?
Read for three signals: when the work happens, where the code runs and what you are measured on.
- Timing. Does the role start before a contract is signed, or after? Pre-sales work points to a solutions or sales engineer, whatever the title.
- Code. Will you write and maintain code that runs on the customer's systems, or build demos and designs on sample data?
- Measure. Is success a deal, a design or a deployment that people use every week?
Travel will not settle it, because both kinds of role travel: 53% of forward deployed postings mention it. See whether forward deployed jobs are remote, and forward deployed engineer vs software engineer for the comparison on the product side.
Frequently asked questions
Is a solutions engineer the same as a sales engineer?
Often. At some employers the two titles describe the same pre-sales job of demos, technical answers and proofs of concept. Others use solutions engineer for post-sale work that configures the product for a customer, which comes closer to forward deployed work. The job description settles it.
Can a solutions engineer become a forward deployed engineer?
Yes, and the customer skills carry over. The gap is usually production ownership: writing code that runs on a customer's systems, keeping it running and handing it over. Shipped engineering work is the strongest evidence to bring.
Do forward deployed engineers have sales targets?
Usually not directly. They are typically measured by a deployment that people use, though a successful first deployment often makes the case for a larger contract. Sales engineers, by contrast, are commonly paid partly on commission.
