How much does a forward deployed engineer make?

Forward deployed engineer jobs in the US advertise a median base salary range of $160,000 to $230,000 a year, with a median midpoint of $198,000, across 223 posted ranges from 43 employers in our Hiring Index on October 7, 2026. Senior titles post more. These are advertised base ranges, not total pay.

What do forward deployed engineer jobs pay?

The median US posting advertises a base range of $160,000 to $230,000, and the middle half of posted midpoints runs from $165,000 to $244,000.

A midpoint is halfway between a posting's minimum and maximum. Medians count each employer once, so a company that posts the same range on dozens of roles does not set the figure.

Outside the US the data is thin: 8 ranges in GBP from 6 employers. No other currency has enough published ranges to show.

How does pay change with seniority?

Pay rises with the level in the title: titles with no stated level post a median range of $153,000 to $200,000, against $175,000 to $246,000 for senior titles.

Manager, director or head titles post the highest median, $240,000 to $300,000.

Level is read from the title alone. 60% of titles state no level, so that group mixes early-career and experienced roles. Intern and junior titles publish too few ranges to show on their own.

Which cities pay forward deployed engineers the most?

Among US metros with enough published ranges, the New York City area has the highest median midpoint, $221,000, and the Los Angeles area the lowest, $170,000.

The gap between metros is smaller than the spread inside any one of them, so the employer and the level matter more than the city.

How does that compare with a software developer's pay?

Posted forward deployed pay is above the typical US software developer's wage, but the two numbers measure different things.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual wage for software developers at $135,980 in May 2025, across every employer and level. The forward deployed median midpoint of $198,000 comes from advertised ranges at the companies that hire for the role, where a few large employers and expensive metros carry much of the weight.

The work differs too: see forward deployed engineer vs software engineer.

How should you read these figures?

Read them as advertised base ranges from a sample of employer job boards: a guide to what offers look like, not a census of what people earn.

  • Posted pay only. These are the base ranges employers advertise. Equity, bonuses and commission are not included, and an offer can land anywhere in the range or outside it.
  • Only some postings publish pay. 32% of the 765 open roles do. Pay transparency laws, such as New York State's, require ranges in job ads, one reason US postings dominate.
  • A sample, not the market. The index reads 86 employer job boards that publicly advertise these roles. It is not random, and the largest board holds 16% of the roles.
  • Per currency. Each currency is shown on its own and never converted.
  • Small groups hidden. A pay figure appears only with at least 5 ranges from 3 employers.
  • Weekly. This page reads the same data file as the Hiring Index, so the two always agree. The methodology explains every rule.

Frequently asked questions

What is the starting salary for a forward deployed engineer?

Our data cannot say yet: too few intern and junior postings publish pay to show a figure. Titles that state no level post a median range of $153,000 to $200,000, but that group mixes early-career and experienced roles. Ask each employer for the range at your level.

Does the posted range include equity or bonus?

No. The Hiring Index uses only the annual base ranges that postings publish. Equity, bonuses, commission and benefits are not in these figures, so total pay can be higher than the advertised range.

Is forward deployed software engineer pay different?

Not as a separate figure. A forward deployed software engineer is the same role under a longer title, and the index counts every title that says forward deployed together. See whether an FDSE is the same role.

How often do these numbers change?

Every week. The Hiring Index reads the employer job boards once a week, and this page is built from the same data file, so its figures always match the index. This version uses the data from October 7, 2026.
